Antique Carpenter No. 60 door Rim Box Lock Patentee Civil War Confederate area 118H x 151W x 18D

The box type lock measures approx. 4 3/8" x 5 5/8". A brief History of the lock: It was not until the early 1800’s that the rim lock was completely contained within a box having 4 sides and both a front and back. The lock patented by James Carpenter of Staffordshire, in 1830, had a drop forged collar welded to the sheet-iron front and nose plate to form the sides and one while on the back was also of sheet iron and was screwed through the front. The principal feature of this much-exposed lock cast iron cam that raised the latch when the knob was turned, rather than drawing it back. The Carpenter is readily identified by a brass patent seal attached to the front bearing the legend “Carpenter and Co. Patentees”. This was on all locks until the death of James Carpenter in 1844, at that time the firm became “Carpenter and Tildesley” and the brass seals were adjusted accordingly. The true Carpenter patent seal is embossed in the center with the British royal arms. The keeper has not only the name of the maker impressed on the brass edge strips but also the initials of the reigning monarch, i.e., (WR William IV, 1830-7) . Other examples might be VR (Victoria, 1837-1901) or GR (George IV, d.1830).
