Copper is a metal that can be oxidated by acid. The air mixed water can generate weak acid.The detergent you use may be weakly acidic too.
So the copper sink may be oxidated gradually. But it is very different with steel oxidation. The outcome of steel oxidation is it becomes rust powder,and then steel go on being oxidated, finally it all turns to powder.
However copper will generate a coating on its surface to provent further being oxidated. So there is a lots of copper antiques made hundred years ago and is inherited generation by generation.
At first ,it is only small dark dots appear on the sink. Then more and more dots become an area. In the end , the color of the whole sink will changed totally. the color becomes darker than before. It is more of an vintage feel.The two sinks in the above picutre is being oxidated.
If you use copper washing water which is a strong acid , to wash the sink, the progress of oxidation will be very fast,it will be back to its original copper color. If you dont have copper washing water at hand, you can use white vinigar mixed with salt.You can also adjust the sink color by adjusting the acid percentage.
We have already oiled and waxed the sink.
If you want to slow down the oxidation progress and keep the color stay longer when it is in your hand, you can wax it often. The wax can be car wax,bee wax,funiture wax etc.
The grease on your dishes also works. So the natural oxidation is actually very slow, it takes years.
